Use of domestic furniture and materials

Untitled 2005
I've been looking back at images of old work from art college. This was the time I often used domestic furniture in my work - which I am thinking about again as I approch my residency in newcastle.

Its interesting to see how the use of colour started to creep into my work.

Plumbing pipes and chairs (2005)

Red coat hangers and ironing board 2005

Pink hosepipe and furniture, AVA Gallery (October 2005)
The hosepipe was originally yellow but something about its undulating form drove me to alter it. And the colour instinctively spread out into the space.

POST Artists: Research and development trip to Athens

October is going to be a busy month as I will also be going on a short research and development trip to Greece with 3 other members of POST artists. http://www.postartists.com/index.html

We will be hosted by artists from the Greek collective ‘OgreAttend’ and the focus of the trip will be a mutual exchange of experience and ideas around collaborative practices and delivering publically sited projects, along with the exploration of common ground and possible future collaborations between ‘OgreAttend’ and POST in Athens in 2011 and London in 2012.

The trip is funded bv a NAN 'Go and See' Bursary - so many thanks to a-n magazine.

More on my upcoming residency at 25 Stratford Grove

Katie Gilman - Belonging(s)

In residence from 12-17 October.
25 Stratford Grove http://25stratfordgrove.wordpress.com/

“I am driven by the urge to ritualistically define and explore the formal qualities of objects and spaces in a quest to consider my own place in the world....”

For my residency at 25sg I will locate, document and collect abandoned materials and objects from the surrounding area and experiment with them in the project space.

Having worked in recent years predominantly making temporary installations in the public realm I'm really looking forward to returning to a more intimate domestic scale and setting.

Drawing on my characteristic repetitive, process driven practice I will experiment with found materials with the aim of exploring the undercurrents of memory and loss in my work and to develop lines of enquiry for future development.
